Aventura Mall is without a bookstore after Quade Books closed in July, ending a two-year run at the shopping center just as Barnes & Noble and independent booksellers expand across South Florida.

Barnes & Noble opened a new store Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 3201 N. Miami Ave. in Midtown Miami. The location occupies the former West Elm space at the Collection at Midtown Miami, with approximately 12,300 to 12,400 square feet of selling space.

Commercial Observer first reported the lease in December 2025. The opening marks Barnes & Noble's fifth location in Miami-Dade County and its 21st Florida opening since the company went private in 2019.

For Aventura shoppers, nearby Barnes & Noble locations include stores in Pembroke Pines, Plantation and Fort Lauderdale. Miami-Dade locations include Coral Gables, South Miami, Kendall and Pinecrest.

Quade Books closes after two years

Argentina-based Quade Books opened its first U.S. location at Aventura Mall in July 2024, bringing Spanish- and English-language titles, author readings and other literary programming to the shopping center.

The store originally operated on the lower level near Bloomingdale's before relocating several times.

In June, the Miami Herald reported that Quade had moved to a kiosk across from Nike after giving up its larger storefront. The kiosk closed in July, according to Miami New Times.

The closure leaves Aventura Mall without a dedicated bookstore listed in its online shopping directory.

When Quade opened in 2024, it marked the return of a bookstore to the mall after roughly two decades.

Aventura Mall opened in 1984 with two bookstores, B. Dalton Bookseller and Waldenbooks. Borders and Barnes & Noble later operated nearby before eventually closing.

Mall executives did not respond to the Herald's requests for comment in June about Quade's relocation or plans for its former storefront.

No replacement bookstore has been publicly announced.

Barnes & Noble leads regional bookstore expansion

The Midtown Miami opening is part of a broader national expansion by Barnes & Noble.

The company planned approximately 60 new stores in 2026 after opening more than 60 in 2025, according to USA Today.

The bookseller has credited its growth in part to a strategy that gives local store managers more authority over book selections, displays and events.

"Our new bookstores in Florida have been wonderfully received, and it is exciting to continue that growth in such a creative part of the city," Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt said in a statement announcing the Midtown location.

The store opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and book signing by author L.J. Shen.

Independent bookstores are also expanding in South Florida.

Books & Books operates multiple Miami-area locations, while Posman Books opened at Miami Worldcenter in 2024. Roots Bookstore and Market has opened in Liberty City, and Steamy Lit has expanded with romance-focused bookstores in Miami Springs and Fort Lauderdale.

Another independent bookstore and cafe, D Third Place, is scheduled to open in Pinecrest on Nov. 7.

Miami New Times linked the renewed interest in physical bookstores partly to younger readers, including Generation Z, and the popularity of book recommendations shared through TikTok's BookTok community.

Aventura Mall continues attracting retailers

Despite the bookstore closure, Aventura Mall continues to add retailers and attract shoppers.

More than a dozen brands have signed leases at the property, including Uniqlo, Celine, Revolve, Suitsupply and Parfums de Marly, according to Chain Store Age.

The mall also reported a 9% year-over-year increase in foot traffic during the first quarter of 2026.

Aventura Mall was named the nation's best shopping mall for the second consecutive year in USA Today's 2026 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.

For now, the regional bookstore expansion has not brought a new bookseller to Aventura Mall. No replacement for Quade Books has been announced.
