Aventura City of Excellence School students can ditch their uniforms all week as the school observes National Red Ribbon Week.
The dress-down runs Monday, Oct. 26, through Friday, Oct. 30, according to the school's website. ACES is joining a nationwide drug-prevention campaign under this year's theme: "Be A Hero, Stay Drug Free!"
The school posted dress code rules for the week. Students must wear at least 50% of the dress-down theme and must still follow the standard ACES dress code. Crocs and hoodies are not allowed.
The Drug Enforcement Administration says more than 80 million young people and adults participate in Red Ribbon Week each year during the Oct. 23–31 window by wearing or displaying red ribbons. The campaign traces back to 1985, when DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena was kidnapped and killed in Mexico, where he had been investigating drug traffickers. He was grabbed on Feb. 7, 1985, while headed to lunch with his wife, Mika. His body was found on March 5, 1985. He was 37.
Friends and colleagues in Camarena's hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons in his honor. The National Family Partnership formalized the campaign in 1988, with President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons.
The ACES dress-down applies through Friday, Oct. 30.
