A broken 16-inch water main on Hibiscus Drive has knocked out normal water service along South Ocean Drive, putting residents and businesses under a precautionary boil water notice.

The water is not safe to drink without boiling.

Hallandale Beach Public Works, which manages the water infrastructure for that stretch of South Ocean Drive, posted an emergency alert about the break Tuesday, Aug. 18. Crews are assessing the damage and working on repairs, the city said. Residents may experience low water pressure in the meantime.

The notice means tap water along South Ocean Drive cannot be used for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth unless it has been brought to a rolling boil first. Water is still safe for washing dishes, doing laundry and other cleaning tasks.

How long will it last?

The city's event calendar lists the interruption through Tuesday, Sept. 1. The city has not confirmed whether that is a firm end date or a maximum planning window. The boil water notice cannot be lifted until two consecutive water-quality tests come back clean.

No Hallandale Beach spokesperson has provided a specific timeline for when the main will be fixed. The Aventura Beacon has reached out to Hallandale Beach Public Works for an update.

What residents should do

  • Boil before drinking. Bring tap water to a full rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice or brushing teeth.
  • Use bottled water as an alternative if boiling is not practical.
  • Washing is OK. Dishwashers, laundry machines and showers can still use tap water normally.
