Howard S. Weinberg won a second term as Aventura mayor with 9,801 votes, or 78.89%, to challenger Alberto Zaltzberg's 2,622 votes, or 21.11%, according to unofficial results from the Miami-Dade County Supervisor of Elections. All 8 of 8 precincts reported, with 12,423 votes counted and a margin of 7,179 votes. Weinberg, a lawyer who first won the office unopposed in 2022, will serve a second four-year term.
What was at stake
Aventura's mayor presides over City Commission meetings and represents the city to outside agencies, according to the city charter. The position is part-time and elected at-large to a four-year term.
The key issues:
- Cost of living: Weinberg pointed to Aventura's low property tax rate during the campaign. Zaltzberg focused on rising reserves, insurance and special assessments that he said squeeze condo owners, especially retirees on fixed incomes.
- Workforce housing: Weinberg proposed a "Hero Housing" concept requiring luxury high-rise developers to set aside 20% of rental units for teachers, police officers and city workers.
- AI in government: Zaltzberg, a real estate broker, campaigned on putting artificial intelligence into city permitting and budget processes. Miami New Times reported that his use of AI-generated deepfake campaign videos raised questions about compliance with Florida law.
The result keeps the current administration in place.
A little history
Weinberg served eight years as an Aventura city commissioner starting in 2010, according to Florida Politics. He was sworn in as mayor on Nov. 15, 2022, after his only rival withdrew.
Zaltzberg, who moved from Buenos Aires to Florida in 2001, lost a 2022 bid for Commission Seat 6. He ran under the slogan "Make Aventura Great Again."
The nonpartisan race drew 12,423 votes. Weinberg's 2022 race was uncontested.
What's next
The results remain unofficial until the Miami-Dade County Canvassing Board completes its canvass. All vote types, including Election Day, early votes and vote-by-mail ballots, are completely reported.
The next City Commission regular meeting is scheduled for Nov. 17, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the Commission Chamber at 19200 West Country Club Drive.
