Aventura residents can sign up for more than a dozen free library programs running Sept. 24 through Oct. 8, covering children, adults and caregivers at the Aventura Branch Library.

The lineup, posted by the South Florida Sun Times, includes a toddler literacy session led by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Micky Steinberg, free tutoring funded by The Children's Trust, an Alzheimer's caregiver support group and a writers' workshop. All events are free. They take place at the library, 2930 Aventura Blvd., unless noted otherwise.

For kids and teens

LEGO at the Library runs Thursday, Sept. 24, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children ages 6–12. Adult supervision is recommended for younger children.

Homework Help and Tutoring, staffed by certified teachers in one-hour small-group sessions covering reading, math and science, is available Saturday, Sept. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program serves students in grades K–12 and is funded in part by The Children's Trust.

Color Me Happy, a coloring session with materials provided, meets Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Open to ages 6 and up.

Switch Party, a video game session where players can go solo or with a friend, runs Thursday, Oct. 8, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Open to ages 6–18.

For families

Commissioner Steinberg leads a Talking Is Teaching session on Monday, Sept. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program features stories, songs and activities for toddlers and preschoolers ages 18 months to 5 years and their caregivers.

Chess Club meets Monday, Sept. 28, and Monday, Oct. 5, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Open to ages 8 and up, beginners and advanced players.

For adults

Applause for Words, a recurring writers' workshop facilitated by author Elaine B. Johnson, meets Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the conference room. The workshop is for anyone interested in writing fiction or nonfiction with the hope of publishing. Open to ages 19 and up.

Introduction to Computers, taught by instructors from Collective Sistahood, covers mouse and keyboard basics, Word documents, internet browsing and email. Sessions run Saturday, Sept. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 3, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Open to ages 19 and up.

Falun Gong Meditation and Exercise meets Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program is available in person or online via Zoom. Online participants must register; a Zoom link will be emailed within 24 hours of the session. Open to ages 19 and up.

Literary Discussions, led by Dr. Lillian Schanfield, professor emerita of English at Barry University, meets Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each session focuses on a short literary work or a topic related to language. Open to ages 19 and up.

Health and support

Free blood pressure screenings, offered by the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, run Thursday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Open to ages 19 and up.

The Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group, presented by the Alzheimer's Association, meets Thursday, Oct. 8, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The group is for caregivers of loved ones with dementia to share coping strategies and learn about community resources. Open to ages 19 and up.
