Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is looking for parents to help choose the district's next round of math textbooks, an opening that applies to families at Aventura-area schools.
Eligibility and application
The district posted the call for volunteers on X on Oct. 27, saying it needs parents to join its District Instructional Materials Review Committees (DIMRC). The district’s Oct. 27 post said parents of students in grades K through 11 may apply. Its volunteer page says applicants must have a verified child enrolled in a district public school and that child must have access to the materials during their adoption period; the page does not specify whether parents of grade 12 students can apply for AP course committees. Reviewers will be picked through a random selection process.
The new materials will be used through July 2032, according to the district's volunteer information page.
Math subjects under review
The scope is broad. Committees will review textbooks across elementary math for grades K-5, middle grades math for grades 6-8, high school algebra, geometry and Algebra 2, pre-calculus, calculus, college algebra, probability and statistics, and AP courses including AP Calculus AB, AP Statistics and AP Precalculus.
Selection and time commitment
One parent committee member and one alternate will be selected per grade level or subject area committee. Non-employee parents of the district receive additional weighting in the random selection, according to the volunteer page. District employees who apply as parents must use personal or vacation days if selected.
The commitment is significant. Selected parents must attend all required meetings, whether virtual or in person. They need reliable transportation and access to a computer with internet, as some meetings and materials will be online. Members will receive training in evaluation techniques and scoring rubrics before reviewing materials.
Review schedule and conduct rules
A "Cone of Silence" rule bars committee members from discussing submitted materials with any publisher representative outside of official sessions, per district policy. M-DCPS has posted the review schedule. The district's math adoption page lists reviewer training for Jan. 7, 2027; publisher presentations for Jan. 11-14; a progress meeting for Feb. 8; and evaluation and recommendations for Feb. 22. The district says committee meetings are open to the public, but some event locations remain to be announced.
Final adoption
After the committees make their recommendations, the Miami-Dade County School Board will hold a public hearing and an adoption vote at the School Board Administration Building, 1450 NE 2nd Ave. in Miami. Following adoption, parents and Miami-Dade residents will have a 30-calendar-day window to contest the board's selection of any specific textbook.
