Aventura passengers could gain a direct rail connection to Florida's Space Coast by 2030 after federal officials awarded $57.5 million toward a new Brightline station in Cocoa.

The Federal Railroad Administration and Florida Department of Transportation celebrated the award Tuesday, Oct. 6, with officials from the city of Cocoa, the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization and Brightline, according to the city's announcement.

The grant was originally announced Aug. 11. The October ceremony marked the formal presentation of the funding, which will support the station's final design and construction.

Cocoa's project was the only station selected nationwide for funding through the National Railroad Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program, according to Brightline's original grant announcement.

The approximately $95.4 million project includes a new passenger station, a multiuse access road, parking facilities and roughly four additional miles of double track. The federal award represents approximately 60% of the estimated project cost.

Cocoa station would expand Aventura's rail connections

Brightline trains already pass through Cocoa on their way between Orlando International Airport and South Florida. The proposed station would become the first passenger stop between Orlando and West Palm Beach.

The preferred site is near U.S. 1, State Road 528 and State Road 501, also known as Clearlake Road, in the Cocoa Curve area.

For Aventura passengers, the station would create a new destination along Brightline's existing route, providing rail access to the Space Coast and its major tourism and employment centers.

Kennedy Space Center is approximately 17 miles from the proposed station, while Port Canaveral is about 10 miles away, according to the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization.

Local officials are targeting a station opening as early as 2030, according to Florida Today. The project must still complete design and construction, and no guaranteed opening date has been announced.

The new station would follow an earlier public-private investment in Aventura's own Brightline facility.

Miami-Dade County announced a $76 million investment when construction began on Aventura Station in September 2020. A separate 2021 county resolution approved transferring $4 million from the city of Aventura toward the east-side pedestrian bridge.

That contribution originated from agreements under which Aventura Mall and another private property owner committed $2 million each toward a transportation improvement.

Aventura Station opened in December 2022.

Project expected to support 3,500 jobs

The Cocoa station is projected to generate up to $350 million in economic activity and support approximately 3,500 jobs, according to city officials.

The figures are projections associated with the proposed development, not jobs already created or economic benefits already realized.

U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos, whose 8th Congressional District includes Cocoa, said he helped secure the federal funding.

Brightline CEO Patrick Goddard said the project would bring passenger rail access to a region the company has long considered part of its expansion plans.

The city's August announcement said Brightline would partner with Cocoa to construct the station and would maintain and operate it after completion.

The award is part of a broader $416 million federal rail investment in Florida announced Oct. 6.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the package includes $356 million for railroad crossing safety improvements at 910 locations statewide.

Those improvements are separate from the Cocoa station project.

Brightline expansion continues amid financial restructuring

The federal investment comes as Brightline restructures its debt through bankruptcy proceedings involving affiliated parent companies.

In a Sept. 25 announcement, Brightline disclosed a restructuring support agreement with financial stakeholders that included commitments for $490 million in new long-term financing.

Certain affiliated parent entities subsequently entered Chapter 11 proceedings. Brightline Trains Florida LLC, the company operating passenger service between Miami and Orlando, did not file for bankruptcy.

Train operations have continued during the restructuring.

Brightline identified the Cocoa station as one of its continuing growth priorities, along with additional commuter connections in South Florida and a possible future extension from Orlando to Tampa.

The company reported that ridership increased 14% and revenue rose 17% during the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

Despite the financial restructuring, Brightline and Cocoa officials have continued to advance the proposed station, which would give Aventura riders another destination on the Miami-to-Orlando corridor.
