Some Miami-Dade County mail-in voters opened their ballot packets to find the return envelopes already sealed shut.

County election officials blame South Florida's rain, heat and humidity for melting the envelope glue inside mailboxes, WPLG Local 10 first reported Thursday, Oct. 22. The problem affects voters across the county, including in the Aventura area, where the Nov. 3 general election is less than two weeks away.

Alina Garcia, Miami-Dade County's supervisor of elections, said voters can rip the sealed envelope open and reseal it with Scotch tape before mailing it back.

"The important thing is your signature," Garcia said.

If the envelope is too damaged to reseal, voters can deliver their completed ballot in person to any of the county's 28 early voting sites. Garcia said voters who drop off a ballot must bring a photo ID.

One of those 28 sites sits in the Aventura area: the Northeast Dade-Aventura Branch Library at 2930 Aventura Blvd. Other nearby locations include the North Dade Regional Library at 2455 NW 183rd St. and the North Shore Branch Library at 7501 Collins Ave. in Miami Beach. All early voting sites are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Sunday, Nov. 1, according to Local 10's early voting guide.

More than 100,000 Miami-Dade residents had already voted by mail as of Oct. 22, according to Local 10. Elena Muñoz, a Miami-Dade voter, told the station she decided to drop off her ballot rather than mail it.

The deadline to request a new mail-in ballot passed Thursday, Oct. 22. Voters who already have a ballot in hand can still mail it or deliver it to an early voting site before the Nov. 1 cutoff.

Voters who want to verify their registration status can call 1-866-308-6739, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the Florida Division of Elections. Acceptable forms of photo ID at early voting sites include a Florida driver's license, a debit or credit card with a photo and signature, a student ID, a retirement center ID or a public assistance ID.

Early voting in Miami-Dade runs through Sunday, Nov. 1. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
