Sunny Isles Beach will open its newest waterfront park Thursday, Sept. 3, giving local residents tennis courts, basketball courts, outdoor fitness equipment and a walking path steps from the city line.
The free celebration at Intracoastal Sports Park, 15800 Collins Ave., runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Activities include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tennis and fitness demonstrations, music, raffles and complimentary appetizers, according to the city's September Islander newsletter. Häagen-Dazs will provide free ice cream while supplies last. Tennis attire is encouraged.
The 0.63-acre facility is the 13th in the Sunny Isles Beach parks system. It sits on a former construction zone along 158th Street and Collins Avenue, a site city leaders broke ground on in February 2025. The park is designated primarily as a resident-only facility for Sunny Isles Beach cardholders.
At the February 2025 groundbreaking, City Engineer Richard Labinsky said the park came together through developer contributions. "Through development bonuses we were able to capture additional parks for our residents," Labinsky said, as reported in the March 2025 Islander.
Resident Jonas Nielsen said at the February 2025 groundbreaking that neighbors were eager for a park within walking distance. The city's only indoor court is at Pelican Community Park, so the new outdoor courts add capacity for tennis and basketball players across the area.
City officials projected a mid-2026 opening as recently as Mayor Larisa Svechin's February 2026 State of the City address. On March 19, the City Commission approved up to $200,000 in additional compensation and extra time for contractor MBR Construction, Inc. to finish the work.
There is no public parking at the park itself. Free parking is available at the Gateway Park Garage, 151 Sunny Isles Blvd., with complimentary shuttle service to and from the event, according to the city's event page. Pre-registration is encouraged at sibfl.gov/ispgrandopening. The city's Cultural & Community Services Department can be reached at 305-792-1706 for questions.
