Sunny Isles Beach will hold a public ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, to mark the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The remembrance begins at 8:30 a.m. outside the Government Center at 18070 Collins Ave., according to the city's event calendar. First responders will speak, followed by a moment of silence and the lowering of the flag to half-staff.

The event is free. The city's calendar lists it as open to all age groups, including youth, teens, adults and seniors.

Mayor Larisa Svechin announced the ceremony on the city's website, saying 25 years have not diminished the significance of that day. Svechin called on residents to honor the nearly 3,000 people killed on Sept. 11, 2001, including hundreds of first responders who rushed toward danger. She stressed the importance of ensuring future generations understand what happened and recognize the courage demonstrated in the aftermath.

On that morning in 2001, hijackers crashed two planes into the World Trade Center in New York City, a third into the Pentagon and a fourth into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back.

Nationally, President Donald Trump is expected to attend a 25th-anniversary ceremony at the Pentagon rather than the Ground Zero memorial in New York City, according to Newsday. Vice President JD Vance is expected at the memorial service at the National September 11 Memorial in lower Manhattan.

The Sunny Isles Beach ceremony takes place at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Government Center, 18070 Collins Ave.
