Sunny Isles Beach residents have until Tuesday, Sept. 1, to nominate a local veteran for the city's Veterans Wall at Heritage Park.
The city announced the nomination call on X on Tuesday, Aug. 25, urging neighbors to honor veterans who live or have lived in Sunny Isles Beach. Nominees' names will be added to the wall and recognized at the city's annual Veterans Day Celebration in November at Heritage Park, 19200 Collins Ave.
The Veterans Wall has grown each year since at least 2019. In 2020, four names were added: Jesus Alberto Garrudo, Robert Aldon Semple, Barry Tannenbaum and Richard J. Tipa.
To submit a nomination, residents need two documents: proof of the veteran's honorable discharge from U.S. military service and proof of residency in Sunny Isles Beach, either a Resident ID Card or a utility bill, according to the city's nomination page. Both documents are required.
Nominations are open to honorably discharged veterans who are current or former city residents. The Sept. 1 cutoff is the same annual deadline the city has used since at least 2019.
The Veterans Day Celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Heritage Park. The city has not yet announced a start time for the 2026 ceremony; past events have started at 9:30 or 10 a.m.
