Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach residents who want to help homebound seniors weather hurricane season can volunteer with Meals on Wheels South Florida for a meal kit delivery on July 25.

The nonprofit is partnering with Florida Power & Light Co. and the Florida Council on Aging to pack and deliver hurricane preparedness kits to more than 100 seniors in Broward County, according to the organization's hurricane preparedness page. Volunteers will work out of the nonprofit's Plantation warehouse at 6741 W. Sunrise Blvd. To sign up, contact [email protected].

Kits provide food when storms disrupt deliveries

Each summer, Meals on Wheels South Florida assembles shelf-stable meal kits so clients have food on hand if a storm disrupts regular deliveries. The kits contain non-perishable, ready-to-eat food items that do not require cooking or refrigeration, designed to sustain seniors through multi-day service interruptions when volunteers cannot reach them.

The organization says on its website that for many clients, the weekly volunteer visit is their only in-person contact. A multi-day power outage or flooded road can sever that connection entirely.

Nonprofit has served the region since 1984

Meals on Wheels South Florida has provided hunger-relief services across the region since 1984, relying on roughly 500 volunteers to deliver meals and conduct safety checks. Executive Director Wendy Bourgault, who joined in January 2025 after more than 20 years in nonprofit management, leads the operation.

The organization opened a second distribution warehouse June 24, with a ribbon-cutting in Plantation. Cleveland Clinic Florida presented a check as part of a five-year, $150,000-per-year commitment that funded a new walk-in freezer and expanded storage.

Evacuation help available for Miami-Dade seniors

Seniors in Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach who need evacuation help can pre-register for Miami-Dade County's Emergency & Evacuation Assistance Program at miamidade.gov. The program provides specialized transportation, medical shelter placement and welfare calls for residents whose medical needs prevent them from evacuating on their own.

The city of Sunny Isles Beach maintains hurricane preparedness resources at sibfl.gov/hurricane. The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
