A Medicare fraud specialist staffed a free information table at the Northeast Dade-Aventura Branch Library on Thursday, Aug. 20, one of several programs offered at area libraries as the school year gets underway.
Lilliana Rey, a Senior Medicare Patrol specialist with Alliance for Aging, led the session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the branch, 2930 Aventura Blvd. Adults 19 and older learned how to spot, report and prevent Medicare scams. A second session is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, at the same time, according to the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) events calendar.
Creative Kids Art Program Returns for Younger Children
That same Aug. 20 afternoon, children ages 6 to 11 could drop in for Creative Kids from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Aventura branch. The art program covers painting, collage and other hands-on projects.
Weekly Meditation and Stress-Relief Classes Continue at Aventura
The Aventura branch also hosts Falun Gong Meditation and Exercise on Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Overcoming Stress & Anxiety with Meditation, led by Steve Pollack, meets Wednesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. Both are open to adults 19 and older.
Citizenship Classes Offered at Both Branches
At the Sunny Isles Beach Branch Library inside the Government Center, 18070 Collins Ave., a citizenship class is listed for Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, according to the Patch community calendar. The class previously ran on Tuesdays; residents should confirm the schedule with the branch at 305-682-0726.
The Aventura branch offers a separate nine-week citizenship series, "Realize Your American Dream," presented by Hispanic Unity of Florida on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Registration is required through the program's online form.
Chess Club, Early Literacy Programs Continue Weekly
As we reported Aug. 15, Chess Club and early-literacy programs continue at both branches. Chess Club meets Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Sunny Isles Beach branch for ages 8 to 16 and Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Aventura branch. Talking Is Teaching, a toddler reading program, is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Sunny Isles Beach branch.
Free Tutoring Returns to Aventura Branch Aug. 29
Homework Help and Tutoring, funded in part by The Children's Trust, returns to the Aventura branch on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Certified teachers provide one-hour sessions in reading, math and science for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
All programs are free.
