Scout families in the Aventura area can sign up for a Railroading Merit Badge Day at Brightline's MiamiCentral station on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Brightline and Scouting America's South Florida Council and Central Florida Council are partnering on the event, which will give Scouts a hands-on introduction to railroad operations, career paths and rail safety, according to a Brightline press release published Sept. 22. A separate session will run the same day at Brightline's Orlando station, making the program accessible to troops along the full corridor.
The event follows Rail Safety Week, the annual nationwide campaign organized by Operation Lifesaver, Inc. that ran Sept. 21-27. The 2026 campaign marked the 10th anniversary of the See Tracks? Think Train initiative.
Scouts who attend will participate in educational sessions and interactive activities covering railroad history, modern passenger rail and the importance of safe behavior around tracks and crossings. The program fulfills merit badge requirements. Sessions will also explore how passenger rail contributes to economic growth, mobility and sustainability across Florida.
Brightline spokesperson Ashley Blasewitz said the partnership aims to build awareness among young people. "We hope this experience also sparks interest in the next generation of transportation and infrastructure professionals," Blasewitz said in the Sept. 22 press release.
Daniel Penny III, a Scout leader with the Central Florida Council, said the event gives Scouts a chance to earn a badge while learning about rail history, technology and safety firsthand.
The South Florida session takes place at MiamiCentral, 600 NW 1st Ave. in Miami. Aventura-area Scouts can ride Brightline from the Aventura station at 19796 West Dixie Highway to reach the venue.
Troops interested in participating can contact their local Scouting America council or visit infinitycoe.com/resources for registration details. The site lists separate booking options for the Miami and Orlando sessions.
